Intimacy Directing and Training
Theatre can often feature various moments of intimacy between different characters. Spanning anywhere between heartfelt, romantic, funny or intimidating. Clear, sensitive intimacy direction is essential to create a safe, secure environment for our performers, allowing them to thrive on stage. It also helps to serve the story being told, as well as the director's vision.
Using a combination of physical exercises, open discussion and collaborative, boundary-conscious choreography, Intimacy Directing aims to leave scene partners feeling more aligned, empowered and prepared for their performance.

I am UK based intimacy director, who has been training and developing my own practice since 2021. As well as reading and attending various workshops and talks, I have trained, and continue to train, with the Intimacy Directors and Coordinators (IDC).

Training and workshops completed include Mental Health First Aider (NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding mental health first aid and mental health advocacy in the workplace)​ and IDC Intimacy Professional Accelerator Programme, Level 1 and 2.

Note: Intimacy coordination is a term often used in lieu of intimacy direction, but they are not the same thing. Usually, intimacy direction refers to stage, and coordination refers to screen.

I offer several services to enhance your production or organisation with a consent-forward approach.

Consultation (Zoom, phone or in person)
£30/hour
If your production or theatre company is looking for advice, then a consultation can be booked. This can involve questions about a production or specific moment, to discussing steps that can be taken to improve the consent-forward practices of your organisation. If you are seeking tailored advice, which takes into consideration the limited resources of regional and amateur theatre, this might be a good choice for you. ​

Intimacy Rehearsals (In person only)
Sliding scale, starting from £90/rehearsal (3 hours)
You have chosen a play that involves intimacy, what now? This is when an intimacy director can be of help to you. From discussing with the director their vision, to providing a source of contact for the actors, to running intimacy rehearsals. The needs of your production will vary, therefore the structure of my support will vary, case by case.

Full Cast Consent and Boundaries Workshop (Online or in person)
£60/workshop (1-hour)
A really useful workshop to have right at the beginning of a rehearsal period. This hour long workshop equips a whole cast with tools to be able to better navigate smaller moments of intimacy throughout the rehearsal process. Reducing anxiety and encouraging communication, with the help of some structure guidance. Becoming one of my most popular options.

Production Intimacy Director (In person only)
Based on production budget
Some production require the regular presence of an intimacy director. In an ideal scenario, this would be most production. Having an intimacy director for the pre-production, all the way through the performances, enables a production to function in a much more consent-forward way, leading to more playful and brave work. This can include help with audition notices, cast boundary discussions and intimacy rehearsals.

Consent-Forward Education (Zoom or in person)

If your organisation is looking to improve their approach to intimacy on stage, then this may be a good option for you. A lot of regional and amateur theatres have limited resources, and can't always afford an intimacy director for their productions. The education I offer includes understanding what a consent-forward approach looks like, why it's important, and what changes any organisation can make, regardless of the resources they have access to. To date I have presented to several theatre organisations, including LTG, AITA, Questors Theatre, Archway Theatre and more.
