Intimacy Directing

Theatre can often feature various moments of intimacy between different characters. Clear, sensitive intimacy direction is essential to create a safe, secure environment for our performers, allowing them to thrive on stage.

Using a combination of physical exercises, open discussion and boundary-conscious choreography, Intimacy Directing aims to leave scene partners feeling more aligned, empowered and prepared for their performance.

Elodie has been educating themself and developing their own practice since 2021. As well as reading and attending various workshops and talks, they have trained with the IDC, having completed Level 1 and Level 2 of their Foundations of Intimacy Course, and achieving the title of Consent-Forward Artist.

Services

Elodie can offer several services to enhance your production with a consent-forward approach.

Consultation (Zoom, phone or in person)

£30/hour

If your production or theatre company is looking for advice, then a consultation can be booked. This can involve questions about a production or specific moment, to discussing steps that can be taken to improve the consent-forward practices of your organisation. If you are seeking tailored advice, which takes into consideration the limited resources of regional and amateur theatre, this might be a good choice for you. â€‹

Intimacy Rehearsals (In person only)

Sliding scale, starting from £90/rehearsal (3 hours)

You have chosen a play that involves intimacy, what now? This is when an intimacy director can be of help to you. From discussing with the director their vision, to providing a source of contact for the actors, to running intimacy rehearsals. The needs of your production will vary, therefore the structure of my support will vary, case by case.

Production Intimacy Director (In person only)

Based on production budget

Some production require the regular presence of an intimacy director. In an ideal scenario, this would be most production. Having an intimacy director for the pre-production, all the way through the performances, enables a production to function in a much more consent-forward way, leading to more playful and brave work. This can include help with audition notices, cast boundary discussions and intimacy rehearsals.

Consent-Forward Education (Zoom or in person)

Sliding scale, starting from £90

If your organisation is looking to improve their approach to intimacy on stage, then this may be a good option for you. A lot of regional and amateur theatres have limited resources, and can't always afford an intimacy director for their productions. The education I offer includes understanding what a consent-forward approach looks like, why it's important, and what changes any organisation can make, regardless of the resources they have access to. To date I have presented to several theatre organisations, including LTGAITA, Questors Theatre, Archway Theatre and more.

Travel will incur an additional fee.

Testimonials

“I felt at ease each time I performed this scene and I knew my fellow actors felt the same. The scenes hit new levels due to the [intimacy] rehearsal.”

“It…made me feel safe and comfortable.”

“This is the first time in all the years I have been doing theatre that anyone has approached intimacy scenes in such a professional, sensitive way that made everyone feel extremely comfortable and I feel produced the best results for the play itself”

“I think it’s a brilliant way to safeguard everyone and brings an important structure…which is easily understandable and allows for safe collaborative working.”
